vSphere VSAN 6.5 Demo Part #1

The following will be the part #1 of a VSAN 6.5 basic deployment using Nested ESXi servers series. In part #1 I will describe the process of how to create an ESXi 6.5 server in nested format.

Step #1 - Login into vCenter 6.5 server using you vSphere Web Client or the vSphere HTML 5 client. Once you have login into the vCenter server you will be presented with a window containing similar information as the picture below. To create a new VM click on the Create/Register link located on the center of the window.

Step #2 - After you click on the Create/Register link you will be presented with a window in you must select the type of creation you want to perform as per the image below. For the purpose of this demo we will select Create a New Virtual Machine option.

Step #3 - Enter the information corresponding to the Computer Name and select the proper options for ESXi compatibility (During the time of this writing my physical servers were running ESXi 6.0 Update 2), Guest OS family and Guest OS version. Due to the fact that this is a an ESXi server running in a nested format we will use VMware ESXi 6.5 as the OS version.

Step #4 - Select the share datastore or the local disk where you will store the new VM.

Step #5 - Due to the fact that this server will be used as a template for the servers that will be used for a VSAN 6.5 deployment demo, I will customize the VM with the necessary resources to be able to run ESXi 6.5 and be able to configure VSAN 6.5 later on.

Step #6 - Once the VM settings are configured to your preferences, you will be presented with a window in which you can review your settings before committing them. If everything is correct, you can click on the Finish button to complete the VM creation process.

Step #7 - Once the new VM is created, right click on it and select settings. At the settings window, make sure to expand the CPU section and check on the box to Expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS.

Step #8 - To start the installation of the ESXi 6.5 hypervisor into the new VM we need to go back into the VM settings and under the section of CD\DVD Media we need to browse to the location on your computer where the ESXi 6.5 hypervisor ISO file is located to be able to attached to the VM before it is Power ON for the first time.

Step #9 - As per the image below, select the new VM on the left hand inventory pane and then click on the Power ON link.

Step #10 - Right after you Power ON the VM, Click on the Console link to open a new window to see the status of the Hypervisor installation.

Step #11 - At the Welcome Screen press the Enter button to continue with the hypervisor installation.

Step #12 - On your keyboard press F11 to accept the EULA and continue with the installation process.

Step #13 - Select the partition in the VM where the hypervisor will be installed.

Step #14 - Select your default keyboard language Layout.

Step #15 - Enter and confirm the password for the server's root account.

Step #16 - Press F11 on your keyboard to start the hypervisor installation process.

Step #17 - Once the installation process is successfully completed you will be prompted to restart the server as per the image below.

Once the server is restarted and it will boot into the hypervisor

Thank you!
